Perla Showell is a contemporary artist living in Washington, D.C.
Her love for drawing flourished at a very young age and was guided by “draw with me sessions” with her dad, along with her mother’s gentle reminders to “not press down too hard” when laying down a sketch, that still plays like a whisper, in her mind, to this day.
A long time had passed since she drew a sketch. When she became pregnant with her daughter, Love, she decided that she missed art. In 2021, Perla began drawing again. She found that after so long, she still had the skills she learned years ago. In 2022, she decided to challenge herself by adding color to her art and moving from pencil, to pen. A whole new world of art opened up and she fell in love with illustration!
Perla’s artwork centers around everyday life, as a mom, as a woman, as a daughter, and just an overall person. She loves to connect with people through her art. It brings her so much joy to know that people can relate to her pieces, and it makes them feel less alone when they can identify with what she creates.
